Rethinking Network Theory

International Conference
Dates: 28-30 June 2007
Location: University of Amsterdam
program

Organized by: Institute of Network Cultures (Interactive Media, Amsterdam Polytechnic, HvA), Media Studies, University of Amsterdam, and Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis.

The object of study has shifted from the virtual community and the space of flows to the smart mob. When the object of study changes, so may the distinctions that dominate, particularly the schism between place-based space and place-less space, both organised and given life by networks. We would like to exploit the potential of writing contemporary network theory that suits and reflects the changes to the objects of study that come to define our understandings of network culture – a post-Castellsian network theory, if you will, that takes technical media seriously.

It is time to look for elements that can make up a network theory outside of post-modern cultural studies (which marvelled at the place-less place) and ethnographic social sciences (which reminded us of the ground). What network culture studies needs is a ‘language of new media,’ perhaps even signage, to speak in terms of Lev Manovich; what it currently has is a science-centered ‘unified network theory,’ to paraphrase the language of Albert-László Barabási.

Whilst it may come as no surprise to critical Internet scholars, the notion that networks are not random but have underlying structures remains the key insight for network scientists. Instead of posing new questions, the work that follows from that insight often seeks to confirm that structure and its accompanying patterns, across more and more network-like objects. The question remains which specific contribution critical Internet scholars and practitioners can make to opening up network thought. Such is the purpose of the network theory conference. How must we rethink network culture with a renewed emphasis on technical media and social software?

The Whatever Button for Firefox

Confirm Accept Agree Whatever

At almost every turn on the Web, we are asked to say yes. Yes to registration, yes to membership, yes to personal recommendations. Yes is said for us, with pre-filled checkboxes that read ‘Keep me informed’. Or there might only be a semblance of choice – for example, saying no to browser cookies makes navigating the Web nearly impossible. More generally, however, it is a matter of clicking through the various forms in order to get what we want and to get to it faster. A matter of saying, ‘Whatever’. And when that happens, we might wonder to what extent ‘Yes’ is our own default setting rather than that of the machine.

The aim with the Whatever Button, then, is to pause and ask why we give away personal information so easily. The add-on makes the exchanges honest, re-labeling the buttons we press — whether they say ‘search’, ‘send’ or ‘okay’ — with the more accurate description, ‘Whatever’.

The Button is for fun, of course, but should highlight rather than hide the significance of our various Whatever moments. Buttons can be serious enough: consider the economic importance of Amazon’s One-Click service. Or the implications of the many license agreements we click through so quickly. Given this, perhaps the Whatever Button can be used as an experiment for reflection. Are you careful with your data, avoiding ugly Third-Party clauses and monstrous Spyware? Or do you throw caution to the wind, opening up the personal information floodgates? What button fits you best?

Concept by Michael Stevernson, implementation by Erik Borra.

Get the Whatever Button here. (You’ll need Firefox, of course)

PINGIPUNG LABEL NIGHT at STEIM

Sven Kacirek (live)
A.J. Holmes aka Vanishing Breed (live)
DJ: Andreas Otto & Nils Dittbrenner

The label Pingipung from Lüneburg / Germany releases friendly, melodic Electronica since 2001. They come to STEIM with two of their artists to perform while the label-founders Andreas Otto and Nils Dittbrenner will present their most beloved records from the turntables before and after the shows.

Sven Kacirek (Hamburg) is a virtuoso Jazz- and Drum’n’Bass-Drummer who has released his first solo-album “The Palmin Sessions on Pingipung this year. He substitutes his drum set for paper, wood, and glass (which he gently plays with brushes) as well as some toys and a marimba which he samples and processes to eventually show up with a beautifully woven minimal-electronica-sound

A.J. Holmes’ (London/Berlin) upcoming album “The King Of The New Electric Hi-Lifeâ€? will be out on Pingipung in this summer. Hi-Life, or ‘Highlife’, is a musical genre that is originated in Ghana, Sierra Leone and Nigeria starting in the 1920′s and which is still very much alive and developing to this day. It is a hybrid of African and European music styles, of which A.J. Holmes especially features the typical euphoric guitar-picking style. He will perform with a guitar, his voice, and live-looping equipment. A.J. Holmes has released his debut album “Between Arrival And Departureâ€? under the artist-name of “Vanishing Breedâ€? on Pingipung in 2005.

Datum: 26 april, vanaf 20 uur. De toegang is gratis.

Second Open-Search Workshop

Alpha release of open-search

When: Saturday April 28, 2007, 13.00h CET, 11.00h GMT, 06.00h EST, 14.00h EET, 01.00h HST, 04.00h MST
Duration: official program will be 4 hours
Where (physical): CREA, room 204, Turfdraagsterpad 17, 1012 XT Amsterdam (route)
Where (virtual): through the SecondWorkshop page
Cost: free attendance, free drinks
More info: http://www.open-search.net/Opensearch/SecondWorkshop

If you can hold a keyboard, you should be at this workshop!

The open-search project proposes to build a distributed, peer-to-peer, search-engine. By combining the already existing technologies of peer-to-peer file storage, distributed crawling and peer-to-peer searching, we hope to solve the problems inherent to a centralized search-engine: manipulation, censorship and profiling.

After a period of contemplation and reflection, the open-search project is ready for some serious hacking and discussion. If you have any programming skills, analytic skills, interface design skills or other skills that you can use to contribute to the open search project, we have todo list items with your name on them! Those concerned with the legal and policy details of the project are also welcome for the non-technical track, to discuss policies, legal issues, issues of deployment and ideology versus users.

Virtual attendance will be possible through on-site A/V streaming and internet relay chat (IRC, a web interface will be provided for those unfamiliar with IRC clients). The details will be posted on the workshop page shortly. If you can not be present physically, you don’t have to miss this workshop. The chat will be projected on a large screen during the workshop.

The preliminary program for this workshop is:

  1. 1. an overview of our current progress and the current state of the client (by Robin, our main developer)
  2. 2. hands-on: there will be an install party to get the thing running on everybodies computer (bring your laptop)
  3. 3. hands-on: after installation the workshop will continue in two tracks:
    • technical: discuss, plan and code
    • theoretical: discussion about and planning of activities related to p2p research, law (with guidance of Joris van Hoboken), motivation (elaboration on WhyOpenSearch), community activation

New calendar plugin

It’s been a long time since I’ve done some posting, bad me. Today I did install the iCal for wordpress plugin which lists all events nicely in the sidebar with an exportable iCal format :) I’ll try to post nice new media related events more often.

I’d also like to blog some more, but yeah, I’d need some more time. First I’d like a redesign of my site ’cause I’m really fed up with this one. Anyway, keep checking this site for nice events and for updates of the stuff I’m working on.

The Future of Free Expression on the Internet

Global Internet Filtering Conference 2007

The OpenNet Initiative is holding its first public conference to discuss the current state of play of Internet filtering worldwide. The conference will be hosted by the Oxford Internet Institute and held at the University of Oxford on May 18, 2007. The conference is free of charge and open to the public.

Results from the first global study of Internet filtering carried out by the OpenNet Initiative (for which govcom.org and I made some analyses and visualisations) will be on the table for a day of discussion involving ICT development experts, speech and human rights advocates, journalists and bloggers, international laywers and scholars, and others interested in state responses to online information flows. We hope you will join us in exploring interpretations and implications of our data and helping to shape the OpenNet Initiative’s evolving research agenda.

The day will conclude with a debate hosted by the Oxford Union – Resolved: the Internet is the greatest force for democracy around the world.
