Introduction
The first brainwave was on 11-12-05 and discussed
google earth in relation to Mark's thesis in photography.
'This brainstormsession was organised because there is not much scientific or philosophical writings about google earth. Everybody who has interesting articles or websites or ideas please put it here.'
We started by introducing ourselves:
- MarcFaasse?
- TimoVanKerkoerle?
- DaniilUmanski?
- FedericoSangati?
- ErikBorra
- RoelWouters?
Brainstorm
Marc explained his
ideas? and all the rest noted keywords which we put on the wall. Later we tried to put them in groups, discussed them and wrote some sources with it. We couldn't really find a nice way to group them so we decided to take de Saussure's and Foucaults concept of signifier -
sign - signified. We translated this (not following the theory) into a photographer (the signifier), a camera (the construct with which we signify) and a photograph (depicting the signified). This gave us a simple and usefull way of classifying our notes.
Photographer (Marc)

Other ideas
- The resolution of a satellite is 61 square cm and panchromatic. An idea was presented of taking a picture of Marc making love to his girlfriend. The picture could then be scaled so that every pixel would be 61 square cm. If you take a picture with a resolution of 1024x768 you would need a place of 62,464 by 46,848 meters. A footballfield would be a sufficient large place for this. If we would do it in black and white we could paint it on the flat roof of a very big building. If a satellite then passes by, the picture taken would display Marc making love. A nice way of hacking googlemaps indeed
Comments and discussion
If you want to discuss something it might be better to do it here than in the text. When a discussion reaches some kind of point we can integrate it above. So post your comments here:
If you want to delve into one of the notes deeper just pick it out and write some comments with it. Try to think of a nice format to do it in. I didn't specify any yet as I am not a designer and have the experience that usually something useful emerges by itself.

Two nice quotes by McLuhan:
"The television screen has become the retina of the mind's eye"
as Professor Brian O'Blivion in Videodrome
"If the work of the city is the remaking or translating of man into a more suitable form than his nomadic ancestors achieved, then might not our current translation of our entire lives into the spiritual form of information seem to make of the entire globe, and of the human family, a single consciousness?"
Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man
Read also that 'media' and 'the global village' are terms that he coined. Though he didn't consider this last one positively, as you might know.
